What is a Default?
A default shows on your credit report when a lender closes your account because you have missed payments. A default appears regardless of how much you owed when the account was closed. Are All Defaults Treated the Same Way by Lenders?
No. While lenders may be concerned by missed payments on, for example, mobile phone contracts, they will be much more worried about missed payments on mortgages and secured loans. Mortgage arrears are considered a priority debt and is for this reason that you should try and avoid going into arrears and approach your lender if you think you may have trouble meeting your repayments. If you do go into arrears you should attempt to pay these off before any other debts.
